The United States of America is a large country in North America, often called "The USA", "the US", "The United States", "America", or simply "the States". It has a land area of about 9.83 million sq. km. It is the third-largest country by both land area and population, with over 315 million people. It includes both large cities, and vast, uninhabited and naturally beautiful areas. It is famous for its wide choice of popular tourist destinations, ranging from the skyscrapers of Manhattan and Chicago, to the natural wonders of Yellowstone and Alaska, to the warm, sunny beaches of Florida, Hawaii and Southern California.

The country has three major mountain ranges. The Appalachians extend from Canada to the state of
Alabama. They are the oldest of the three mountain ranges and offer spectacular sightseeing and
excellent camping spots. The Rockies are the highest in North America, extending from Alaska to
New Mexico, with many areas protected as national parks. They offer hiking,
camping, skiing, and sightseeing opportunities. The combined Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges are
the youngest.Yosemite National Park is located in the Sierras, California.

Yosemite National
Park is a World Heritage Site. It is world - famous for its spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, Giant Sequoia groves, and lots of various species of
plants and animals. Almost 95 % of the park is wilderness. It has been protected since 1864.

There is another
world - famous area, Yellowstone National Park. It is located in the state of
Wyoming, although it extends into Montana and Idaho. The park occupies a large
area and includes lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. It is also famous
for Yellowstone Lake which is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America.
It is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the
continent.The park has geothermal features, geysers. Grizzly bears, wolves, and free-ranging herds of
bison and elk live in the park.

There are 58 national
parks in the US. The US is home to more than 400 mammal, 750 bird, and 500
reptile and amphibian species.
